Helping children explore the online world safely

Technology is an important part of children’s lives and learning. At Amington Heath Primary School and Nursery, we want children to enjoy the opportunities the online world offers while developing the knowledge, confidence and judgement they need to use technology safely and responsibly.

Online safety is an important part of our safeguarding work. Children are taught about online risks through the curriculum and are encouraged to speak to a trusted adult if anything they see or experience online makes them worried, uncomfortable or unsure.

 

How We Keep Children Safe Online

Our approach includes:

  • teaching children how to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully
  • helping children recognise inappropriate or harmful content and behaviour
  • teaching children about privacy, personal information and digital footprints
  • helping children understand healthy relationships and appropriate behaviour online
  • teaching children how and where to report concerns
  • supporting children to think critically about information they see online
  • using appropriate filtering and monitoring systems on school devices and networks
  • working with parents and carers to support safe technology use at home

If Something Goes Wrong Online

If your child sees or experiences something online that worries them, encourage them to tell a trusted adult and reassure them that they have done the right thing by speaking up.

Please contact school if an online issue is affecting your child or involves other children from school. Where an online concern raises a safeguarding issue, it will be dealt with through our safeguarding procedures.

If you believe a child is in immediate danger, call 999.

Supporting Your Child at Home

Parents and carers play an important role in helping children develop healthy and safe online habits.

We recommend:

  • talking regularly with your child about the games, apps and websites they use
  • keeping conversations about online life open and non-judgemental
  • using appropriate parental controls and privacy settings
  • checking age ratings before allowing children to use apps, games or social media
  • agreeing sensible boundaries around screen time and device use
  • encouraging children to tell you if anything online makes them feel worried or uncomfortable
  • reminding children never to share passwords or personal information with other people

Online Safety and SEND

Some children may need additional support to understand and manage online risks. We adapt our teaching and support to meet children’s individual needs and work with families where additional guidance may be helpful.

If you are concerned about your child’s online safety, please speak to your child’s teacher or contact the school office. Where there is a safeguarding concern, this will be shared with our safeguarding team.
